Vata Body Polish...

It is happening as the winter chill kicks in.  The wavering between being in a heated room then stepping out into the cold, wanting a hotter shower to warm the body and the dread of wearing additional layers of clothing.  My body is being cocooned, that feeling of freedom and the natural tan has faded.

I have always moisturised by body after a shower.  But now with the change of season my body requires more.  It requires change and attention.  That is when I had the “uhhaha” moment, my body needed a bit of Ayurvedic attention.  I love the Ayurvedic principals; ‘the Science of Life’ – giving attention to your internal and external body for natural healing and health.  So out came the Aika Wellness –  Vata Body Polish.

Vata you may ask.  In Ayurveda there are three body types/dosha: Pitta, Vata and Kapha, which can be determined with consultation from an Ayurvedic practitioner or a quick of quiz.  The practitioner consultation will go into more detail than the quiz, but you will get insight. Also, meeting with an Ayurvedic practitioner you will be able to discuss your wellbeing further.

But for now, I wish to share my AikaWellness – Vata Body Polish experience.   After reading the instruction on the tub, I stepped into the shower, wet a face-washer and wiped over my arms, shoulders, legs, hips, legs, lower back and glutes.  Now my body was ready, I grabbed my little timber scooper and scooped a suitable measure (teaspoon amount) and emptied the body polish on to my palm and started rubbing one limb at a time and grabbing more polish as required.  With the benefiting ingredients of Himalayan crystal salt, Sesame oil, Nutmeg, Ashwaghanda and much more, I continued rubbing not forgetting my torso, hips and glutes.

Begone that white dry dull look and feel.  Standing in the shower, I continued to rub as water from the shower cascaded over my body.  Once the scrub was rinsed off, there was no lingering under the running shower water.  I was out.  Patting my body dry I was amazed to see and feel the difference.

I did this procedure a week later.  Now, two weeks after the last I’m ready to do it again.   Do note:  the second time I did the scrub, I’m not sure what I did differently, but the colour of the scrub did affect my white shirt that I wore that day.  Don’t fear, when I washed the shirt it redeemed its whiteness.  I shall keep in mind to scrub my shoulders more thoroughly, as I did the first time.

As you will have noted I used and linked Aika Wellness, would I recommend it?  For sure.

The Vata Body Polish has benefited my exterior, but I know that I need to look at my diet at this time to further balance vata.

Stay well and happy.  Enjoy…

An Inspiring Change...

It was a lovely winter's day when Eranthi and I caught up and had a wonderful chat.  She really is one inspiring lady...

SWT: We’ve known each other well over a decade; tell us why you got into the spa wellness industry?
After eight years climbing the corporate ladder in the 90’s and having two kids in quick succession both under the age of three I felt I was missing something. I wasn’t getting that same sense of fulfilment from my career and at the ripe old age of 31 felt burn out!  I was searching for a way to live a more meaningful life. The key turning point was coming home close to midnight after a 15 hour day and not having spent any of it with my babies.  I decided then that this wasn’t the life I wanted.  I left my well-paying job, had a 6 month hiatus and then felt the urge to get back into action - as I decided I wasn’t cut out to be a full-time stay at home mum!  I investigated a few different industries and then settled on the spa industry which in the early 2000’s had just started to get popular.  I was drawn to the concept of spa as a healing centre, somewhere that busy and stressed out people could escape to and gain a moment of respite.  I decided then that I wanted to offer a sanctuary of calm and peace for other busy people, parents and corporates who were struggling with the pressures of a too busy life. It was about offering a place of escape and restoration, where they would feel nurtured and cared for.

Aika - Lighthouse
SWT: What enticed you to get into the spa wellness arena?
I wanted to create a space for true healing rather than just somewhere to have a nice pampering treatment.  The concept of my spa ‘Spa Samsara’ was to create a total journey of wellness and our mission was to ‘take you on a journey of discovery by delighting your senses, inspiring your mind and uplifting your spirit.’  From day one we offered naturopathic consultations with an experienced naturopath, Ayurvedic consultations with an accredited Ayurvedic doctor from Kerala, Shiatsu with a Japanese therapist, Thai massage with a Thai trained therapist and Reiki healing from a Reiki master, along with the usual conventional spa treatments such as massage, body treatments and facials.  Our clients loved coming into our sacred space which I designed to be a calm and nurturing environment with an Asian influence.

SWT: You’ve created Aika Wellness, I’m impressed with you research, knowledge & integrity. Why Aika, an Ayurvedic product?
I grew up in Sri Lanka and spent my childhood there before my family migrated to Australia in the mid 80’s.  I was surrounded by what I now understand as an Ayurvedic lifestyle but at the time this was just how we lived.  We ate in line with what was freshly available and I remember that food was always sourced daily from the markets and each meal was cooked with the correct amount of spices and herbs to create a balanced meal.  The flavours (rasa) and combination of dishes at each meal was carefully considered and my maternal grandmother who lived with us was a great cook and would decide if the food needed more saltiness, sourness, sweetness or bitterness.  Food was classified as either heating or cooling and when we were sick my sister and I were given herbal remedies and daily oil massages were the norm.  We would only see an allopathic doctor on the rare occasion and most of our childhood illnesses were treated at home by my grandmother’s and mother’s natural knowledge of herbal medicine handed down over years.  Ayurveda is my heritage and these memories stayed with me long after I came to Australia which is why I was determined to include Ayurveda in my spa and I’m so proud that Spa Samsara was the first spa in Melbourne to include Ayurveda as a modality.

Over the nine years I ran my two beautiful spas I began to research ingredients in skincare and was shocked to find that the products I stocked in my spa contained many questionable and synthetic ingredients.  I was quite upset to have been told by the skincare companies who I trusted that these products were natural and organic when in fact they were not.  As I continued my research I discovered that over the course of an adult woman’s lifetime, we put over 2 million chemicals and ingredients on our skin – that’s a huge amount!  I began asking: how do these chemicals behave once they are inside the body? What harm do they cause? How does our body eliminate or store these chemicals? How do they contribute to toxic body burden? As our skin absorbs over 60% of what we put on it, we really need to make sure the things we put on our faces and bodies aren’t harmful to our skin or our overall health.

I started to look for a 100% organic and pure range that was not only safe but also luxurious and one that offered true wellness beyond beauty and fitted into my holistic spa.  As I kept researching I became increasingly frustrated at the lack of certified organic, luxurious and safe spa products that offered a wide selection of treatments which could be tailored for each individual’s specific needs. I loved nurturing my clients and knew what they wanted: they wanted pure, certified organic skincare products they could trust.

I realised that if I wanted the type of skincare that I would be happy to use on myself and my clients then I would need to create it.  Because I have a degree in psychology I understand the importance of emotional and mental health and the way they impact on our physical and overall wellness.  I wanted to create products that contributed to people’s whole health, wellbeing and peace of mind, beyond just skin.  An Ayurvedic range was the natural choice for me as it is the world’s oldest and most complete system of wellness and health, encompasses physical, mental and emotional health and is the system of healing that I grew up with.   It was also important to me to create a product range that authentically backed up it’s claims of being organic and was certified organic to the highest level possible in Australia.

I spent years researching Ayurveda, developing our own formulations, setting up our own certified organic manufacturing facility ‘The Lighthouse’, going down the avenue of getting organic certification for all Aika products and after 14 years of concentrated research and development I finally launched Aika in November 2017 .  To my utter delight Aika won the Organic Cosmetic of the Year by Australian Organic in our launch year which is testament to Aika’s quality and purity.

Aika Vata
SWT: Yes, congratulations on being 100% certified organic and winning “Australian Organic Annual Award” for 2017. No easy feat?
No it was a long hard road!  It took me years to research certified organic suppliers as we need to show certification for our entire supply chain, from soil to your skin.  As we have over 120 individual ingredients in over 30 products this took quite a while!  We also get audited annually and have to maintain countless records of all our purchasing, formulations, manufacturing, ingredient and label claims, storage and distribution in line with organic certification principles and ecological sustainability.  Winning the award as the best organic skincare range in Australia in 2017 our launch year was amazing and totally validated all that hard work!

SWT: Because it’s an Ayurvedic skin care, is it difficult to determine which product a person should choose?
Despite being complex in creation Aika is beautifully simple to use. The products are created specifically for each Ayurvedic dosha or mind-body type.  If you know what Ayurvedic dosha you are it is simply a matter of picking the products in that dosha range.  If you are unsure then we have an interactive online quiz that you can take which guides you to discover your predominant dosha.

SWT:  What I also love about Aika Wellness is that it gives comfort and insight to an individual that self-care rituals do need to change. What is an ‘Arise’ and ‘Retreat’ ritual?
Ayurveda places great importance on Dinacharya or daily rituals to take care of our body, mind and spirit.  Aika products and rituals are created in line with this concept of Dinacharya and our body’s natural circadian bio-rhythms and encourage us to set aside precious time each day to devote to our self-care.  Our body’s needs in the daytime are different than that at night.  We have created products that are ideal to use in the morning which we call our ‘Arise Ritual’ products and those that are ideal for night time which we call our ‘Retreat Ritual’ products.  These rituals help you bookend your day with a sacred act of self-care and inner reflection and each product comes with a little ritual card, instructions on how to use it and affirmation to help you achieve this.

SWT: A final cheeky question. What’s your little bad vice?
I am rather partial to the French diet and love nothing better than a nice glass of organic wine and some delicious organic cheese and chocolate at the end of the week while putting my feet up.

SWT: That sounds delicious and bliss. Well done!

Take a look, do the dosha quiz and do try Aika Wellness.  Eranthi's passion, dedication and knowledge to creating Aika is inspiring.  I'm predominately Vata and am looking forward to using the Vata Body Polish and rejuvenating around my eyes with the Tri Dosha Eye Balm! ~ Karen owner Spa Wellness Travel

Massage

Massage.  It is a word we have all heard of and it is not to be taken for granted.

A slow inhale-exhale then I calmly express “that was fabulous. Thank you.” That’s what I said as my Li'Tya kodo massage came to end at Mud Day Spa.  It is not the first time and I’m sure it will not be the last time that I thank and feel a sense of gratitude after surrendering to the skilful hands of the spa therapist or masseuse. It’s that feeling of being in the moment and having released all thoughts and angst of the world and reality of outside.

Li'Tya
Life has a strange way of operating with some days or weeks being more emotionally strenuous than others.  We’ve all felt it, that sometimes there are aspects of life that we are attached to that can be emotionally draining for a few days, weeks and months. Then at times there’s the same matter that eases off only to reappear with a feeling of never really disappearing.  The variance of life’s up and down events can be of little or extreme shock, drama, sadness or frustration which can cause emotional tension to rise.  Tension is an indicator that life has been a tad stressful; those felt symptoms of back/neck ache, headaches, light headed/dizzy, irregular breathing, irritable, gastrointestinal changes, worry, rapid heart rate, poor concentration, forgetfulness and difficulty quietening the mind or low energy may just be your trigger.

hot stone massage
If you can relate to any of this, take a moment and ask yourself “when can I take a moment from life to surrender and rejuvenate at a day spa?”.  The array of massages are all benefiting, try and make a promise to yourself that one day you will tick off all the massage options within their spa menu.

Some massages that maybe available on a spa menu:
Swedish/Relaxation        Aromatherapy         Hot Stone            Deep Tissue       Shiatsu
Lomi Lomi            Kodo Massage             Thai             Balinese           Signature        Pregnancy

Here are a few of our favourite day spas within Australia I suggest you book in for a massage:

Park Hyatt Melbourne
Dome Spa Retreat

Not sure which massage will benefit you most, well discuss it with the receptionist on booking. But, often the description and your intuition will serve you correct.
Remember massage is not just about releasing stiff muscles, the power and benefit of having a skilful therapist and the comfort of nicely appointed treatment room – yes, sound, temperature, aroma and equipment make a difference - to release some pent up emotion.  You are more than the physical!

Food Habits...

I wake knowing I need to go for a power walk or do a few salutes to the sun and stretches, but before commencing my regime of activity it’s a drink a glass or two of water.  Without a doubt whilst in the midst of my morning activity, I will start pondering my morning meal. Will it be a green juice, porridge, organic weet-bix with unhomogenised full cream milk, sourdough bread with peanut butter, scrambled eggs and parsley on toast or will I skip it and simply go to my desk with a cup of tea and handful of almonds, time is the essence.
It was after staying at The Farm, that I started blending my green juice at home

There’s not too much routine to my consumption of foods as my daily routine is varied and I like to keep my meals varied.  But there are habits that I do have in place that are a staple:
- my sigg water bottle is always filled with water and with me if I have to head out of the office
- a glass of water is always on my desk, sometimes have fun creating a jug of water filled with herbs or fruits
- a delicious pink lady apple or two also accompanies me (especially in the car when I to see my nephew, he likes an apple)
- a quick meal out to break the desk monotony is a bakery pie + salad or toasty
- days are maxed to three cups of tea at the desk or a couple at the desk and a long black with hot milk on the side at café
- veggies in any quantity, format or combination are consumed at some point in the day
- rarely eat red meat and if its chicken its free range and fish is Australian
- downfall! I do love a cherry ripe, a lemon slice or starfish bakery made muffin

shopping that involves freshness + using recycled bags
TIPS to develop some good food habits:
- pack some nuts, sultanas or fresh fruit for snacks
- purchase a quality water bottle, stop the random purchasing of plastic takeaway bottles, once you have your own you’ll use it
- keep meals fresh as possible whether cooking at home or out – especially if eating out or having take-away you do have options!
- choose foods that are not deep fried, covered in sugar or laden with processed sauces
- herbal tea chilled or a few frozen berries in water instead of any surgery processed drink
- spend a week or so at a spa wellness retreat to experience the wholesome spa cuisine can kick start some good habits

Spa Day for Breast Cancer

It’s happening again!  2016 was our inaugural awareness and fundraising event supporting women and men who’ve been touched by breast cancer and the support was sublime!

For 2017 we have amazing day spas dotted across Australia who are supporting Spa Day for Breast Cancer by donating $10 from each spa treatments booked on  Thursday 12 and  Friday 13 October.  Monies raised over these two days will be donated to Breast Cancer Network Australia (BCNA) supporting not only women  and men who’ve been touched by breast cancer, but their family and friends....

“Spa Day for Breast Cancer was borne out of my experience with breast cancer; I was initially diagnosed in 2007 then again 2013. Visiting day spas, a spa wellness treat, a spa resort and using alternative therapies have all assisted me mentally and physically, as I processed the ordeal of being diagnosed and the array of oncology treatments. BCNA was a resource that I turned to too seek information and insight, both from the organisation and their forums.  Their efforts for assisting people of varying cultural backgrounds, gender and age, as well as treatment advocacy is admirable.  So in gratitude, I'm giving-back or paying it forward to BCNA and the spa industry, as I hope other women and their family and friends, who are touched by breast cancer, find the information and support they require and visit a day spa or two along the way.” ~ Karen Goudge, owner of Spa Wellness Travel

Float and release...

Floatation.  If you ever hear of somebody mentioning they've had a floatation treatment, prick your ears, listen, enquire and join in the conversation.

It had been a few years since I'd experienced a floatation treatment or a watsu session. Waking on a Sunday morning with a stiff neck which I'd tolerated for a few days and the held tension of demands of work and the festive season it was time to take some time out for myself.

Pondering a massage and my options of where I'd go and giving thought to how this summer hasn't given me the opportunity to frolic at the beach and float in the ocean as I'd desired, instantly brought to the forefront of my "mental to do list" a local floatation studio.  That then brought to my attention how the world of spa is putting more wellness options at our finger tips.  I promptly phoned and booked in for a floatation session!

The list of benefits for the body & mind include:
Relaxation response
Meditation
Heightened senses
Chronic stress relief
Pain management
Increased immune function
Enhanced healing / recovery
Deautomatisation
Musculoskeletal awareness
Behaviour modification
Magnesium absorption
Brain synchronization
Anti-gravity benefits
Visualization
Super-learning
Increased stress resistance
Endorphins
Poor sleep / insomnia

In the tepid dimmed room, I put my ear plugs in place and step in to the floatation tank and submerse my body and close the hood on the tank.  The large quantity of empsom salts my body instantly floats. The music is soft and gentle, my breathing becomes a focus and Im in the moment.  I explore a range of movements; rolling my shoulders forward then backward, lifting them up and stretching them down. Tilting my head forward and backward. Rolling my ankles, arching my back, pulling my shoulder blades together and then of course there were moments of nothing but my breath.

The music ceases, my neck still aches.  I start to ponder maybe I  should have gone for the massage.
I then remember there's an inflated travel pillow, I open the hatch, grab it and put it around my neck and sink back into the tepid water. I also place my hand behind my head, laze and breath. I eliminate thoughts. I relax eventually!

When the music starts up again, that is my signal to gather my being and step under the shower to rinse and cleanse my hair. Before getting out of the tank, I smile and have a giggle...that was the best hour given to myself in awhile.  On my departure, I purchase the three session package and drive away looking forward to my next sessions.

Friends, book a Spa Wellness Travel package and we'll place a Wellness Studio floatation treatment within your documentation.  Note:  The Wellness Studio is located in Geelong, Victoria and is open seven days a week.

Asking for it!

Do you ask for what you want or hinder and hide behind your smile to appease others?  Whether you’re single-solo or in a relationship, sometimes asking others to do what you want to do or where you want to go maybe daunting.

What’s prompted this blog you may ask?  Well, I’m reading an article by Mel Robbins that’s featuring failure, rejections and fears that may be holding people back because they may not be asking for what they want.  So, of course I stop, ponder and question myself - being pragmatic, I like to check in with myself every now and then! Its something you may like to do for yourself also.

When you’ve allowed yourself that moment to question what you would like, it may seem like a dream and it is until you take action, then it will become a reality.  To be in that present moment, to ask yourself "what do I want", you give yourself power.  Power to ask whoever it may be for whatever you may want and it is most likely you’ve pondered this, stalled and procrastinated before asking it.  Which takes us back to the underlying reasoning of failure and rejection or is it fear as to why you haven't asked? Every time we ask for something, it’s a hurdle jumped in our life long journey.

If there is a no or rejection to what you've asked, give it a tick, it’s done then move on to the next.   It’s coming closer to the end of the year, is there something that you would have loved to have done or experienced by now or want for the future? What’s the question sitting inside you that you’d love to ask and who?  Asking is about taking action and gathering information that can keep you moving forward - use it to help enhance your mind-body-spirit. Enjoy!

What have you asked for and received?

a trek that pushes you mentally and physically
an island holiday to rejuvenate
a remote experience like no other

Citrus is not just for winter

Standing in the kitchen the other day peeling a mandarin to consume to increase my vitamin c intake as I was feeling the onset of a cold.  I realised, its a given, I have citrus in my fruit bowl all year round and I love it!

Grapefruit, ruby red my favourite, was brought to my attention again a few years ago when staying at an elderly friend's house.  Every morning, like my nana's kitchen used to be when I was child visiting, a small glass of freshly squeezed orange juice, toast with jams and vegemite would be on the breakfast table along with a pot of tea.  The difference at my friend's table, she'd have half a grapefruit placed at my seating waiting for me and an avocado was an addition to the condiments. In the 70's I tried it, as dad was on some grapefruit fad, but I found it repulsive.  Sporadically the grapefruit of delicious juiciness and flavour has become a favourite way to start the day.

Another variation to the start of my day is a glass of warm water and a slice or two of lemon.  I'll keep replenishing the glass, thus myself throughout the day with the lemon water until there's no lemon flavour, only then to add another slice to continue drinking.  This also helps as a reminder to drink those eight glasses of water a day. Another citrus take on my morning beverage is, if I have a lime and feel like a bit of zing to my green juice, I'll simply squeeze it in. It's all fresh and full of goodness.

Come the warmer days and days of extended daylight, its limes that I cherish. Why? because I love a gin & tonic with lime. Lime, I also love squeezed over a delicious Thai curry.  Oh, know thinking of food, another favourite is lemon slice or a piece of lemon tart with a hot freshly brewed lot black coffe.  Lemon gelato, who doesn't love that at least once on a summers day or when exploring Italy.

Citrus offers many benefits beyond being a boost of vitamin c during winter, studies show it may even reduce the risk of women having a stroke.  So, when next visiting your local farmers market or grocer store, grab an assortment of citrus and as I've said before "keep it fresh and keep it real".

Here I'm sharing some delicious recipes that I love to use that involve citrus - enjoy!
Lime & Wasabi dressing
Citrus Salad with Manuka Honey, Vanilla + Pistachio
Lemon Chicken soup Greek style - avgolemono
Absolute Sanctuary - Detox Juice
hot water with lemon + ginger
Australian macadamia + citrus body scrub
How do you add citrus to your day? Do tell...

NEW Lifestyle Collection at The Barai

The Barai is an amazing spa resort located on the beautiful beach at Hua Hin, Thailand.  It was the sister property I.Sawan Residential Spa & Club at the Grand Hyatt Bangkok that brought The Barai to my attention. The space, the treatment, the facilities and the comforts that were dedicated to allowing an individual to retreat and switch off, was breathtaking.

It is a thrill to be advised that The Barai at Hyatt Regency's new Lifestyle Collection has just been released.  To clarify, all though the package may seem dedicated, it is still a spa resort, there are no medical persons conducting or monitoring treatments, but there is a dedicated Director of Spa, Sylvia Marsden overseeing all.  Here is a bit of insight to what you can expect...

THE BARAI Lifestyle Collection was created around the three pillars of good health: rest and relaxation, exercise, and healthy nutrition, all of which are essential to leading a long, happy and healthy life. Programs are available in 3, 5 and 7 day choices:
- Ultimate unwind
- Bespoke yoga journey
- Vital body cleanse
- Dynamic fitness kick-starter
- Healthy weight kick–starter (5 and 7 days only)
“We are very proud to launch our new Lifestyle Collection programs which will focus on identifying our guests personal lifestyle needs, offering support and guidance to help recover from the daily stresses of modern life. After completing the program, our guests will leave THE BARAI feeling revitalised and healthier at the end of their stay. With each program, our guests will receive a Healthy Lifestyle Consultation including a comprehensive Body Composition Analysis with our new InBody machine which goes beyond traditional body composition analysis. Guests will be able to get a detailed analysis of their body fat percentage, lean body mass, and total body water in order to track their health progress and understand how their diet, lifestyle and training regime are influencing overall body composition,” said Ms. Sylvia Marsden, Director of Spa, THE BARAI.

"I, personally want to thank the above day spa's for kindly contributing $10 from the spa treatments booked for the 23rd or 24th June and all the persons that are taking a spa treatment on these days.  Half your luck and enjoy the downtime!  I have dealt with two breast cancer diagnosis and numerous procedures since 2007 and know that visiting a day spa or retreating to a spa health retreat was time, that I gave to myself to remove me from the thoughts and processes of dealing with breast cancer and for that I was greatly appreciative and grateful."

Bean + Veggie Soup...

From here on its going to be porridge laced with cinnamon, flaxseeds and walnuts with a dash of milk that will accompany my green juice in the mornings.  Lunch and dinners will become hot meals full of flavour and substance and that's the reason why I'm sharing this with you.

The change of the season's climate gradually sneaks upon us.  Sure, we've had intermittent rain during the year thus far, but it's the chilly mornings and extra layers that are now being warn day and night, and the sinking of daylight that now sees me leaving the desk as the dark of the evening has set in, that says winter is here.

I cooked a fresh homemade soup last night and sitting outside today with the sun on my back warming my bones, I registered it was the first day of winter and we'll be eating more of this. To this delicious soup you can add more veggies if you please, use pasta instead of beans, but whatever you do make it fresh and make it wholesome....

Method:
Cover beans in water and soak for a day or overnight, changing the water once or twice or adding more water, when convenient.
Heat some olive oil in a saucepan, add onions, carrots and about a minute or so add celery.  Stir it all around so it all coated in oil, not soaking in it! Let it cook away for a couple of more minutes, just for all to look and feel combined.
In between stirring and mixing it up, add garlic, rosemary, thyme and paprika.  Stir all together.  Then add the dice tomatoes.  Stir and mix together.
Add bay leaf, salt, pepper and cayenne pepper.
Put the lid on your saucepan, you may want to add some hot water, then let simmer away for minimum of 40 minutes.
Serve topped with parmesan cheese, as I have or use yogurt or your favourite garnish.
Soup without a bread in incomprehensible, so grab your favourite, mine Zeally Bay organic sourdough and spread with a nutritional food such as tahini, avocado, hummus or simply, traditional butter.

Ingredience:
a cup of white beans
2 small onions chopped into chucks
1 large carrot sliced
1 stick of celery - stalk and leaves
2 cloves of garlic, squashed and roughly chopped
Rosemary leaves of a twig or if putting the twig in, remove it later
Can of dice tomatoes
2 bay leafs
Pinch of salt, pepper and cayenne pepper
Bread and garnish

Serves:
You and a friend or two

Enjoy!

I always use fresh and/or organic where possible.
Also, a few links have been added to highlight the nutritional benefits of just some of the foods.

If you have a favourite recipe that would be fitting as "spa cuisine" we'd love to hear about it....

Water is the place to get active...

There’s such an array of activities available today to help and keep us feeling well and healthy.  It’s the structured form of exercise that we are requiring more of as our lives become more confined to living a sedentary lifestyle; we live in homes that require less physical activity as there’s minimal if any garden to attend to, jobs that have us sitting at a desk or in a vehicle for hours on end (with only fluctuating spurts of standing) or we choose to sit for a duration of time viewing a screen whatever size it maybe.

After a five month recovery from surgery, I’ve been pondering my activity options as I need to expand my exercise routine.  My routine of late has involved walks combined with a bit of incline running, to practicing my friend JessieChapman's yoga dvd at home. But now I want more, but on contemplating an hour’s combat class it would be pointless, as I couldn’t physically sustain that duration as yet.  I have added to my routine lately a weekly visit to the local aquatic centre, that activity has involved walking a few laps of the 25m pool(at a rapid pace) followed by swimming a few laps (at a not so rapid pace!). I then discovered aqua fitness.

I love being in the water, preferably ocean, I was searching for the next level of exercise, something that was going to be a tad more invigorating than my walks and stretching, but nothing too strenuous that I'd feel deflated or strained because I wasn’t at the level of fitness required for the exercise. So, I have now experienced my first deep water aqua and movement unlimited class.  The deep water has now become part of my weekly routine, its has benefits and its entertaining!

Forget the notion of “that’s for the old folk” .  Yes they are there, but so are the young and physically fit all adding variety to their exercise regime.  Who else is out there getting physical with aqua fitness is the lovely Mandy who set up Aquamums.  Aqua fit may not be the most heart-racing form of exercise, but it is great for the mind, coordination and to put you into stead for a great nights sleep.

Mandy with her Aquamums
The reasons and benefits for participating in aqua fit classes is that they can: Increase muscle strength
Build endurance
Increases flexibility
Burn calories
Reduce blood pressure
Are good for:
Low-impact exercise
Alleviating pressure on the joints
Relieving stress and decreasing anxiety

The class descriptions at BASC aquatic centre are:
 Deep Water
A whole body conditioning workout to improve overall strength, particularly the core (abdominal) muscles. Participants are required to wear a buoyancy belt as your feet are off the bottom of the pool.

White Water
A high intensity class designed to elevate the heart rate and improve fitness levels. May involve some moderate resistance work for strength development. An ideal class to add as variety to your weekly fitness regime.

Gentle Aqua
A fun class with a gentle touch. Designed for the older adult, beginners and pre/post natal, classes are social, gentle and conducted in a comfortable / safe environment.

Movement Unlimited
A moderate intensity aerobic workout with a focus on a ‘variety’ of exercises, with ‘fun’ being the key ingredient. This workout is aimed to improve muscle tone and flexibility.

As I regain my fitness and wane from this activity to the next, I’ll be grateful for the experience and the next level of fitness Aqua Fit has taken me to and hope in decades to come, I’m still confident to don the swimsuit and frequent an aqua fitness session.
